The Best Cruise Ports in the US
Our picks by type of traveler, and why.
Quote a Cruise From Your PortThe best cruise ports in the US depend on who is sailing. These are our picks by type of traveler, with the reasoning behind each.
Best for First-Time Cruisers: South and Central Florida
PortMiami, Port Everglades and Port Canaveral offer the widest choice of short sailings to the Bahamas and longer ones to the Caribbean, with frequent flights into nearby airports. A first-timer can pick a three- or four-night trip to test the waters, and if plans change there is almost always another sailing soon.
Best for Drivers in the Central U.S.: Galveston
For much of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and beyond, Galveston is a drive rather than a flight, which removes the biggest extra cost of cruising. Western Caribbean and Mexico itineraries suit a week off.

Best for Alaska: Seattle
Seattle is the main U.S. homeport for round-trip Alaska cruises, with the season running from spring into early autumn. A night in the city before sailing is easy to arrange, and the Inside Passage begins just a day’s sail north. For one-way voyages, ships start or end at Seward or Whittier near Anchorage. Ideas for each Alaska stop are at Alaska Port Excursions.
Best for a City Break Plus Cruise: New York, Boston, New Orleans

These three ports turn a cruise into two trips. New York and Boston pair museums and dining with Bermuda or New England and Canada sailings; New Orleans adds food, music and the French Quarter before a Western Caribbean cruise. Plan at least one night ashore before sailing.
Best for Mexico and Short Getaways in the West: Los Angeles and San Diego
Southern California ports run short Baja sailings and week-long Mexican Riviera voyages through much of the year. San Diego’s cruise pier sits on the downtown waterfront, a short ride from the airport.
Best Small, Easy Ports: Palm Beach, Tampa and Baltimore
Smaller ports often mean shorter lines and simpler parking. Palm Beach suits quick getaways from South Florida; Tampa offers Western Caribbean and Mexico sailings from a compact downtown terminal; Baltimore lets much of the Mid-Atlantic drive to a cruise. Our sister sites Cruise From Palm Beach and Cruise From Tampa Bay go deeper on those two Florida ports.

Whichever port suits you, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can compare the sailings that leave from it.
Best for Hawaii: Honolulu
Inter-island cruises start and end in Honolulu, so you fly in, spend a night or two on Oahu and sail around the islands without the long ocean crossing from the mainland. Longer Hawaii voyages from California ports suit travelers who enjoy sea days.
How We Chose
We looked at the choice of sailings, how easy each port is to reach by car or plane, and what the city adds before or after the cruise. We do not rank ports by fares, which change daily, or accept payment from ports.
